A So-Cal Experiment (2008)
photo book and curitorial project

A specific Polaroid Camera is given to selected artists, and they are ask to document their So-Cal Experience

Southern California has a unique attraction for people. The sunsets, beaches, convertibles, movie stars, palm trees, and beaches may leave us with the idealized Hollywood versions of “So-Cal” superimposed onto our daily realities. Or perhaps we’re numb to the fictionalized So-Cal experience. Perhaps this silver screen version of Southern California has never applied to us or made sense for your lives.

Are there ties between Southern California’s mythology and your reality?
Are they similar, in opposition, unrelated, ironic?

Your mission should you choose to accept it:

Please take this camera for one week and shoot 10 photographs that each, in some way, represent your personal “So-Cal Experience”. This could be anything that symbolizes the feeling of So-Cal and/or anything that symbolizes the connotations that “So-Cal” (the word) may represent.

This particular Polaroid camera is also a participant in this project. It was chosen because the images it produces symbolize Southern California. The Polaroid aesthetic of soft focus, rounded edges, and muted-colors is reminiscent of the ideal postcard-like California dream.  Please think of the camera as part of your composition.
